A Letter From a Reader: The Dora Shirt Dress (Eleanor, Founder)

In 22 Years of Dressing Women for Florida Summers, One Request Came Up More Than Any Other. A Dress That Works Three Ways. This Is the One I Finally Made.
On the six things I insisted on when I made our 100% linen Dora shirt dress, why most summer dresses only do one job, and why it is clearing now as we move online.
I am Eleanor, and I started Sanibel Boutique 22 years ago, a few streets back from the water on Sanibel Island. If I had a dollar for every woman who walked into my shop and asked for a dress that could do more than one job, I could have skipped selling clothes entirely.
What they meant was this. A dress for the restaurant that also works at the market. Something to wear over a swimsuit that does not look like a coverup. A piece that packs for a week away and comes out of the case ready. For years I sold three different garments to answer those three sentences. It always bothered me.
The Dora is the dress I finally made when I stopped accepting that. I argued for six things when I made it, usually with a supplier who wanted me to do the cheaper thing instead.
Real 100% linen, in a light summer weight.
Not a blend, and not the polyester they sell as linen look. Woven light enough to move air with every step, so you stay cool on the days the pavement shimmers, and it softens like a good cotton sheet the more you wash it.
"I wore it through a whole day at the farmers market in July and never once felt trapped in it. Real linen is a different animal."
One dress that honestly works three ways.
Buttoned up, it is a dress you can take to lunch. Worn open over a tee and pants, it is the light layer you reach for on cool mornings. Left loose over slim pants, it is a tunic. I fussed over the cut until all three worked, because a dress that does three jobs earns its place in a suitcase and a closet.
"I packed the Dora and two tops for a week in Clearwater and did not touch half my suitcase. It was the dress, the jacket and the tunic."
A high-low hem that moves, and never catches.
The hem curves gently, a touch shorter in front with a soft slit, longer in the back. It gives you room to walk, to climb into the car, to step onto a boat if the day goes well, and it flatters the ankle instead of cutting straight across it.
"It moves when I walk instead of wrapping around my legs. And the little slit means stairs are no longer a negotiation."
A real collar and little pearl buttons.
This is what separates a dress you wear to dinner from a dress you only wear at home. The collar frames the face the way a good shirt does, and the small pearl buttons run all the way down, so it looks finished whether it is buttoned to the top or open over a tee.
"People assume I dressed up. I pulled one thing over my shoulders and buttoned four buttons."
Sleeves you set yourself.
The sleeves come with a little button tab, so you decide where they sit. Rolled to the elbow on the hottest days, let down when the evening cools or when you would rather your arms kept their privacy. They stay where you put them, which is rarer than it should be.
"Rolled up at noon, down by dinner. It is like two dresses that way, and the tab means the roll never slips."
Ten colors that do the work for you.
Khaki, beige, mushroom, grey, blue, green and black for every day, and orange, red and purple for the women who like a little color. Each one chosen so the dress looks right with the sandals you already own, over the swimsuit you already have, next to the tops you may already have from me. No prints to tire of. Just colors that keep working.
"I started with the khaki and went back for the black. Between them there is no summer occasion I am not dressed for."
The Dora, against the dresses you have been buying
You can find a summer dress for eighty dollars almost anywhere. Before I made the Dora I tried a great many of them, looking for one that did more than a single job. Here is the difference, laid out plainly.
A blend, or polyester sold as linen look
One way to wear it, and one occasion
A straight hem that catches when you walk
No collar, no buttons, no polish
Sleeves you are stuck with either way
Real 100% linen in a light summer weight
Dress, light layer, and tunic in one
A curved high-low hem with a soft slit
A real collar and pearl buttons all the way down
Tab sleeves you roll and set yourself
Women kept asking me for three garments. I would rather sell them one that does all three jobs properly.
Why the Dora is clearing now
We are closing the island shop and moving Sanibel Boutique online, so the whole summer collection is clearing, the Dora with it. It is now $80.95, from $179.95, and when you add a second piece the discount stacks further, up to 30 percent on top.
I checked the usual names before I set that price, because I know you will. Eileen Fisher asks more than $168 for a linen dress. J.Jill sits around $139. At $80.95 we are barely breaking even, and once we hand back the keys at the end of the season, this price goes with the shop.
Sizes run from S to 5XL, in all ten colors, while they last.
I bought the khaki for a beach week and have worn it three ways ever since, buttoned for lunch, open over a tee for errands, loose over white pants for dinner. It is the hardest working thing in my closet, and the coolest.
Folded and ready to go out. Wrapped by hand, the way every order has left this shop for 22 years.
A dress that only does one job spends most of the summer hanging in the dark. The Dora was made to be out of the closet.
The reviews say the same things I have, over and over. 4.8 stars across 847 women. If you have ever wished one dress could carry a whole summer week, this is the one I would put in your hands myself, while the colors are still in stock.
