A Letter From the Founder

In 22 Years of Dressing Women for Florida Summers, Pants Were Always the Hardest Thing to Get Right. The Ammora Is Why I Stopped Saying That.

A woman watering porch plants in the olive Ammora linen pants

On the six things I insisted on when I made our 100% linen Ammora pants, why most summer pants fail women our age, and why they are clearing now as we move online.

Eleanor · Founder of Sanibel Boutique · Sanibel Island · August 2026 · 5 min read

I am Eleanor, and I started Sanibel Boutique 22 years ago, a few streets back from the water on Sanibel Island. In all that time, the piece women asked me for most often was the one I refused to make for years. Summer pants.

Not because pants are complicated. Because pants for a Florida summer are nearly impossible. A summer top is allowed to be loose. Pants have to hold on to you somewhere, and the place they hold is exactly the place most of us would rather they left alone. Every summer I watched women walk into my shop, look at the pants rack, and walk past it to the dresses. I understood completely.

The Ammora is the pair I finally made when I stopped accepting that. I argued for six things when I made it, usually with a supplier who wanted me to do the cheaper thing instead.

1

Real 100% linen, in a light summer weight.

Not a blend, and not the polyester they sell as linen look. Woven light enough to move air with every step, so your legs stay cool on the days the pavement shimmers, and it softens like a good cotton sheet the more you wash it.

★★★★★

"I wore them through a whole afternoon at the farmers market in July and my legs never once felt trapped. I did not know pants could do that."

Carol R., Fort Myers
2

A wide smocked waistband that holds without digging.

This was the hill I was prepared to die on. No zipper pressing into you at lunch, no stiff button digging in when you sit. A deep band of soft smocking that moves when you move, holds everything gently in place, and leaves no angry red line at the end of the day.

★★★★★

"These are the first pants in years I have not thought about once between breakfast and dinner. The waistband simply is not there."

Diane M., Naples
3

A high waist that smooths, and never pinches.

A waist that sits up over the middle and smooths it, instead of cutting across it the way low waisted pants do. Tuck a top in, or let it fall over the band, either way you look put together instead of pinched.

★★★★★

"They sit right at my natural waist and smooth the part of me I am fussiest about. I stand straighter in them, I really do."

Patricia L., Sarasota
4

A wide leg that skims, and never clings.

The leg falls straight and loose from the hip, so the air moves and the fabric never grabs your thighs in the heat. It drapes like a good skirt while giving you the ease of pants.

★★★★★

"They swish. I had forgotten how nice it is to wear pants that move around your legs instead of sticking to them."

Linda K., Cape Coral
5

Fabric that does not go see through in bright sun.

Pants get this wrong even more often than tops, and it is a worse surprise. The Ammora is woven opaque, in the white as much as the black, because no woman should have to check her own shadow at the grocery store.

★★★★★

"I bought the white, which I would normally never dare. Full sun, fully opaque. Not a hint of what is underneath."

Janet S., Bonita Springs
6

Six colors that go with the tops you already own.

Olive, white, black, wine red, navy and khaki, each chosen to sit quietly under the linen tops in your closet, including the ones you may already have from me. Two small wooden buttons at the waist are the only decoration, and the only ones it needs.

★★★★★

"I started with the olive and went back for the navy. They go under every single top I own."

Maureen T., Punta Gorda

The Ammora, against the pants you have been buying

You can find summer pants for seventy dollars almost anywhere. Before I made the Ammora I tried a great many of them, looking for the pair that did not betray me by lunchtime. Here is the difference, laid out plainly.

Most $70 Summer Pants

A blend, or polyester sold as linen look

A zipper and a stiff waistband that dig by noon

Cling to your thighs the moment the heat comes up

Go see through in bright sun

A low rise that cuts across the middle

The Ammora

Real 100% linen in a light summer weight

A soft smocked waistband that never digs

A wide leg that moves air with every step

Woven opaque, even the white

A high rise that smooths and holds

I refused to sell pants that women would walk past on the way to the dresses. The Ammora is the pair that finally stops them at the rack.

Why the Ammora is clearing now

We are closing the island shop and moving Sanibel Boutique online, so the whole summer collection is clearing, the Ammora with it. It is now $69.95, from $140, and when you add a second piece the discount stacks further, up to 30 percent on top.

I will tell you what I told you when I wrote about the Zamma top. At this price we are barely breaking even. Once we hand back the keys at the end of the season, this price goes with the shop. And if you already own one of my linen tops, you know exactly how the Ammora will feel before the parcel is even open. The two were made to be worn together, and a top and the Ammora in one order takes 15 percent off both.

Sizes run from S at 8 to 10, up to 3XL at 18 to 20. The olive, the white and the black are already close to selling through as I write this.

I own the olive and the navy, and between them I have barely worn a dress since June, which for me is saying something. They are the first pants that keep up with a Florida summer instead of losing to it.

The Ammora linen pants folded with a kraft hangtag tied with twine

Folded and ready to go out. Wrapped by hand, the way every order has left this shop for 22 years.

Pants were the piece women our age had quietly given up on. I would rather the Ammora prove them wrong than sit folded in a box.

The reviews say the same things I have, over and over. 4.8 stars across 847 women. If you have spent years walking past the pants rack, these are the ones I would put in your hands myself, while the colors are still in stock.
